SAGE GROUSE habitat restoration seed collection- -Thunder Basin

FridayNov 01, 2013 - SundayNov 3, 2013 - Number of Volunteers: 20
Sponsor:  National Forest Foundation
Description: Go where no WRV Volunteer has gone before! To Bill, WY. In the heart of the Powder River Basin, the Thunder Basin National grassland is a hallmark of grassland conservation efforts. Covering 855 square miles, this grassland serves as essential habitat for the threatened Sage Grouse, and is home to herds of pronghorn, elk and many other wildlife.

Many of our restoration projects depend on locally-adapted native seed for ecological reasons, or because purchased seeds are unavailable or simply too expensive. The seeds collected on this project will be multiplied on a farm, thanks to an inter-government agency partnership with the US Forest Service. The result is an increase of harvested seeds by up to 1000 fold, making them available for large-scale restoration projects on your public lands. In this case, seeds of Wyoming Big sage will be collected, and those seeds will be grown into sage plants that we can install on a future project...all to restore habitat for the rare SAGE GROUSE.

FREE camping will be provided.

THURSDAY night arrival HIGHLY encouraged.
